Lady Chaps beat Argyle in 9-3A opener

In a week filled with wet weather and postponed games all over Denton County, ominously gray clouds hovered overhead and it seemed as if Thursday’s game between Argyle and Aubrey would be washed away yet again.

Instead, as the temperature cooled and the sprinkles departed, the teams took to the diamond in the District 9-3A opener for both schools.

Under fairly dry conditions, it was Aubrey that gained a head start in the district standings. The Lady Chaparrals broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring two runs in the top of the frame to fuel a 5-1 victory over Argyle.

Kaley Reding pitched a complete game for Aubrey (16-2), allowing one earned run and three hits. Reding (14-2) baffled Argyle’s batters all night, striking out 11 in the win.

“Our goal obviously was to put the ball in play,” Argyle head coach Natalie Coonrod said. “We did not do that as well as I would have liked to.”

Thursday night’s game originally was scheduled for Tuesday, but rain forced the matchup to be moved back two days.

The postponement lengthened an already long layoff for Aubrey, which hadn’t played in 17 days. Aubrey had its last two games cancelled.

Lady Chaparrals head coach Shon Ranton thought his team wasn’t sharp.

“I thought we were very sluggish at the plate,” Ranton said. “We had some mental mistakes that almost put me in the hospital.”

But Aubrey’s bats came up with timely hits.

With the Lady Chaparrals leading 2-1 in the top of the fifth, Reding and Logan Even each doubled in a run. Aubrey led 4-1 and added another run in the seventh on a double by Even.

The top of the batting order carried Aubrey against Alyssa Bruton (8-11), who struggled to throw strikes early but recovered after the second inning.

Reding went 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs. Even went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Ranton said the offensive performance was not indicative of what Aubrey is capable of doing.

“I just know by the way that some of them were swinging, we definitely needed some live pitching coming at us,” Ranton said. “So getting back into live pitching will hopefully get our timing going, because we’ve got a big [game today] against Sanger.”

For Argyle (8-11-1), the top of the order and No. 5 batter Emma Havrilka were the only ones to hit successfully against Reding. Maci Moore, Lizzy Roden and Kate Walker each had a single. Walker singled in Moore in the third inning, as Moore slid feet-first into home plate for Argyle’s only run.

Coonrod was proud of the way her team improved on its two dismal performances against Aubrey last season, when Argyle committed a combined four errors and allowed 22 runs.

Last season, Argyle finished at 3-7 and in fifth place in the 9-3A standings. Two years ago, Argyle made a trip to the Class 3A regional quarterfinals. Coonrod said her team has to expect and believe it can accomplish big things this season.

“Two years we go halfway to state, and last year we finish fifth [in district],” Coonrod said. “We’re not doing that again.”
